  • The preheater to the boiler stripper is nothing more than heat integration. Some waste heat from somewhere else on the ship is, I'm presuming, captured via a fluid and transferred there as a means to reduce the heating requirements of the boiler. Similar techniques are used in plants to offset utility costs. Here, probably done for safety reasons.

  • I've seen an attempt to use this same technology to harvest hydrogen from water then inject it into the induction system of petrol/diesel engines which supposedly resulted in lower emissions and an increase in fuel economy however it's unclear if the end result was worth investing in as the gains were relatively small and therefore required that one do a lot of mileage for it to pay for itself. I believe the company was called 'CGON systems' and they were based in SW of England.

  • So "klinker" is a blacksmithing and heating term for the glassy slag left over while burning coal, it's a hard slag inclusion independent from the ash that needs to be broken and cleared to prevent it from blocking teh airflow. Most coal burning devices have a "klinker breaker" to, obviously, break the klinker into pieces so it can fall through the grate.

  • Ahhhh, Amine. That smell just isn't right the first time you experience it, but you get used to it pretty quick. It is funny to watch how spouses react to that smell the first time their sailor returns from a sea jaunty. Whenever we deployed , we would keep our civilian clothes inside of vacuum sealed bags to keep them from smelling like Amine. Made our port trips to the bars much better. We also had the added benefits of conserving space in our bunk racks (since the vacuum sealing of the bags compressed the clothes) AND our clothes didn't get all wrinkled up. All told, knowing how vitally important Amine was to our survival, we were more than happy to absorb that smell for the sake of our safety. :) Great video Destin. I love this series because it takes me back to my days onboard my sub.
