  • This is NOT A POLITICAL VIDEO!!! I'm a simple man... Also regarding Halogen light bulbs, it seems in countries with 240VAC they are designed such that their life is same or better than incandescent. In 120V of north America almost all I can see for halogen is half the life of incandescent for same power rating (make sure lamps run on same voltage and light output when comparing). In any case, I filled my table per my local values for my lamps, and some per my taste. you can always adjust the table values to your local numbers and taste and recalculate. LED still will get top point. and who cares if halogen scores a bit higher WHEN LED IS WAY HIGHER ANYWAY! and remember... THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL VIDEO!

    • Here in Romania - Central South Europe (EU ) I still can buy Incandescent light bulbs 100 Watts for like 20 Euro - cents :) The are Ilegal, Made in China :)) but we don't give a damn about mortal rules and the scared Brits do :))) PS : We have the biggest Hydroelectric Power Station in Europe , Iron Gates 1 and 2 on Danube River, each has around 2.000 MW installed power, so who gives a damn about puny bulbs ?:)))

  • I'm sure there's a study or 10 out there about this .... I have heard that incandescent lights are not really as bad as the initial power consumption data shows because of the heat that they release. (in colder climates like here in Canada) The reasoning being... lights come on at evening when the temp drops, lights give off heat and supplement heating your living area, thus taking some load off of your heatings system. There is obviously some truth to this, as a 100W light is a 100W heater that also gives off light.

  • The problem with LEDs is the unrealistic claim about their lifespan. My house were all LEDs and the average life is barely more than one year, rather than the 10 years they claim. In comparison incandescent last about 3 years and CFLs over 5 years at my usage rate. That has improved a bit now than 5 years ago but it's still nowhere near the advertised number.

  • My experience of domestic light bulbs is that overall the tungsten lasts the longest. CFL has a life span of about half the tungsten, even less in often switched short duration usage. They are irritating to have to wait for them to resemble a light bulb and not a glow-worm, and are not pleasant to contemplate breaking the glass. They use far more energy to produce with their reliance on electronic components, eg. bridge rectifier, inductors, capacitors and resistors, etc. LED, lifespan with the ones I've tested has been extremely poor, maybe due to cheap electronic components used in their construction. They perform very similarly to tungsten in most respects, except that their dimming properties is not that great. So, to conclude, give me the tungsten, any and every day.

  • The only problem with LED lamps is that you shouldn't switch them on and off for short periods of time, as this will quickly break the LED driver inside the LED bulb. That's why normal light bulbs are a better choice for the basement or storage room, because you usually just turn them on for a short time and then leave the room.

    David CzechowskiDavid CzechowskiAcum 16 Zile
    • @Niek Vels I didn't knew that. Thanks!

      David CzechowskiDavid CzechowskiAcum 8 Zile
    • That's not correct though. And in most situations flat out wrong. The damage is done by heating and cooling, causing expansion and contraction of components. Since LEDs produce so little heat, switching one on for a few seconds or a minute doesn't cause heating. Most drivers have a max temperature before damage occurs at all, this value is often never met untill environmental temperature is high, and heat can't dissapite. Also this effect damages old light bulbs a lot more (as they heat up instantly), so especially for often-switched lights you should go LED. Which is why Philips flat out states: Unlike discharge lamps, LEDs are semiconductors and their life span is not affected by the number of times they are turned on and off.

    • Philips is technologically the best. They've also cracked the driver issue that was the main limiter on LED lifespan. Osram is known to be high-quality but tends to be more expensive. As their focus was elsewhere they're not the cutting edge in LED, but same philosophy. But both those are European brands. The one that gets best quality while having most widely store-available in the US is Cree.

  • Doesn’t the inefficiency of the tungsten making light also make heat making your heater use a tiny bit less gas?

    PUBG GamingPUBG GamingAcum 22 Zile
    • In theory yes, but the energy cost of that is ludicrous. Most gas and electrical heaters outperform such a system by several thousand percent in efficiency. It's also a non-discussion unless you've actually insulated your house. I've redone nearly my whole 1960's place, and ripped out single pane glass that losses 5,6 watts per square meter per hour. It's since been replace by cheap HR+ glass that depending on location (the thickness of the building frame limited me) it loses 1,2 watts or 1,1 watts per square meter per hour. Most people have some single pane and some 1st gen double pane (4 watts per m² per hour) glass. Walls are also bad, ussually brick, air pocket, brick. Roofs tend to lose a lot of heat too. And that's for European standards. The US is tons worse, living in what building standards here would consider to be unstable, leaky wooden shacks full of cold-bridges. You want to build a giant firebomb of two wooden panels on a wood frame with F-rated for fire safety spray PUR in between that will go up like a bonfire? You can, it's legal in the US. Fix all that before getting into such marginal things.

      Niek VelsNiek VelsAcum 8 Zile
  • I'm sure someone else has said this but in case not, LEDs used for illumination are not silicon based. Silicon LEDs are infrared due to their wide band-gap. Substrates are usually GaN, InGaN, AlGaN, AlGaAs, AlInGaP. Red is an issue for where LED lighting is used in commercial settings like retail so they add extra phosphor blends to get a kick in the deep red, it makes food look more appealing, generating more sales. Can we please appreciate the massively reduced fire risk of LED lights? Numerous house fires have ben started by halogen and basic incandescent lamps setting fire to accumulated dust and curtains as they operate at ridiculously high temperatures.
